NYC Attorneys- Questions of Trust?

June 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

No one can dispute these are tough times for almost everyone in New York City. Incomes are falling as more and more people are becoming unemployed or underemployed, let alone those working in retail losing significant commissions. Whose fault is this? Almost certainly it is easy to pinpoint on some of Manhattan’s professionals from brokers, real estate agents, the “quant” guys working in finance in Wall St. so it seems logical that lawyers would get brought in on this crisis of trust. Some rightfully so!

Sometimes it is important to realize that like every other profession, lawyers are not all equal, but not a lot can be done to help you without some faith. Attorneys take oath’s to uphold the constitution of the United States, and New York State, we are strictly regulated by ethics codes as to what we can do and how clients must be served.  Furthermore, every client has rights, which are reinforced by the attorney rules of professional conduct, and New York courts.

You should take advantage of any free initial consultations with a lawyer to get a feeling for how you might like to work with them; if they give you some faith in your situation and above all else, take some stress of your shoulders.

Being a lawyer is a calling; a profession where we hope to offer counsel and advice.  We need the public to be able to trust us the same way they would trust a doctor, accountant or priest.  We do everything in our power to protect that trust, including explaining your alternatives clearly, how long your case may take, and how much it may end up costing you.  Your attorney is also required to explain under what circumstances he/she gets paid, and which circumstances require a refund.

There is no doubt attorneys want to be able to help you, but there is also no doubt that people will often wait so long out of worries about trust that they will end up in a far worse position! At Dwyer & Associates we regularly try to give valuable advice, even if means you won’t be our client if we feel you don’t need a lawyer. If you are worried about debt in particular, please don’t suffer for so long you end up with a judgment.

If you are worried about your finances/debts please get in touch with a lawyer or debt counselor to see what solutions there are. New York City has many free legal services for low income residents.
